It’s 'aquatic fantastic' with ABB’s new interactive learning tool for the water and wastewater industry. Designed as a teaching aid for drives, the VR plant room allows you to immerse yourself in ABB ACQ580 drives, so you don’t find yourself in deep water when confronted with the real thing.
It’s an invaluable tool for engineers and those looking to learn about drive functionality and programming.
EDC’s Sophie MacKinnon trialled it and took to the VR headset like... a duck to water, finding her away around a treatment plant and inspecting the ABB drives whilst checking parameters and seeing how the drive setup impacted the plant's operation. These are all essential functions for maintenance personnel and engineering operatives.
So, if you think your treatment works could benefit from 'plunging in', get in touch.

When a major manufacturer in the North East had a breakdown on a vital production line, our North East engineers mobilised immediately, headed to site and had a new ABB HVAC drive installed & running in no time.
With engineers who have a wealth of experience in drive installations, and a range of ABB inverters off the shelf for immediate shipping and installation there's never a need to call the police or the fire brigade when your plant is down – just call on your 4th emergency service (EDC NE), your (local) ABB drive Value Provider.
]]>Your drives are about to enter a long winter. Protect them from it with the equivalent of a comforting woolly scarf: a service visit from an engaging EDC engineer.
Unless your inverters are living in the equivalent of an ivory tower – a temperature-controlled control room, they, like your car engine, will be subject to the vicissitudes of transitioning from summer (warm rain if you’re in Scotland) to winter.
It’s estimated (from a poll of our engineers) that in excess of 80% of VSD failures are caused by either temperature or environmental issues. Vacuum your vents, furnish with new filters and change out your cooling fans now.
Love your drives at this time of year with a little time, care and preventative maintenance.
From 0.25kW - 22kW it's the new 'go-to' machinery drive for applications where space is at a premium and conditions can be sub-optimal.
With a wealth of features to allow it to function in humid, warm or dusty atmospheres (the circuit boards are coated and the airflow through the electronics is minimised) it has advanced ground fault protection and will happily perform in temperatures of 60°C with derating.
Designed for OEMs and system integrators our ACS180 range is a multitasking polyglot, programmable in several languages and capable of finding its niche in numerous industries and applications (you'll be surprised what it can handle).
But don't take our word for it, find out more about the features and benefits of the ABB ACS180 drive, the reliable, smooth operator.
You can read more about the ACS180 drive in the Sept 2023 issue of Drives and Controls magazine

Contamination of your VSD control board with residue can happen; not all drives work in an office (ie control room) some are working hard on the shop floor or in the field.
That’s why maintenance is truly essential; it protects your valuable assets (and cleaning this board would only have taken minutes).
This customer recently made the move to EDC North East—and it looks as if their service contract (and confidence in us) has already paid for itself.
So, when you’re looking to look after your ABB drives, be sure to entrust them to an authorised ABB drive Value Provider. There’s a reason we wear the badge.

EDC celebrated 27 years in business during our annual EDC BBQ.
A gloriously sunny day allowed all 3 EDC companies to celebrate with family and friends at our offices in Erskine, with an afternoon of food, wine and bouncy castle with slide. 🥤 🥩 🥂
The bouncy castle proved especially popular.
No, we did not allow adults on it.
Did they try...we do not wish to comment.
]]>After only two months with us, Reetesh Kamat (our newest graduate engineer) is on site getting to grips with adaptive programming on a variable speed drive.
This allows him to customise ABB drives to our customers' exact needs, without the addition of extra software/hardware. Not only does this feature save time, it saves money, utilising the inbuilt ability of the asset and maximising its potential.

A roadside motor control kiosk had been destroyed in a road traffic accident. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but the sewage pumps were out of action, requiring expensive tankering operations to empty the sewage tanks.
‘Wasting’ no time, EDC North East mobilised two hire drive cubicles, reconnected all the pumps & had the site operational again within 8 hours.
With our ABB hire drives available off the shelf at both our offices in Erskine and Gateshead, they can be easily placed in the field and easily cabled into both new and existing applications.
So, no matter the issue, you can be up and running again in no time at all.
Ah, the sweet smell of success!
With an estimated 300 million industrial electric motors in operation, imagine the energy savings which could be made by delivering greater efficiency.
See how ABB’s comprehensive and reliable range of motors is keeping the world turning, whilst still cutting your energy costs...https://youtu.be/qqqMSEkjZO0
Both EDC and EDC North East can show you the energy savings which can be made with energy-efficient ABB motors and the classic SynRM ABB motor /ABB drive pairing.

When the EDC engineers were called to site to replace a distribution board, they couldn’t just stop there.
Being the perfectionists that they are, they gave the site a Marie Kondo style makeover, setting it in order—and laying it out as it should be (with trip hazards removed).
Pride in your work: something that comes as standard at EDC.
Air blowers play one of the most important roles in sewage treatment and because of this they need the most efficient and reliable control systems.
That’s why they chose ABB drives and EDC North East to supply, install and commission these specialist ACQ 580 water drives.
Now their processes are riding high – almost on the crest of a (controlled) wave!

]]>When a biomass power station suffered a failure on their vacuum system, it meant they were unable to clear a blockage in the fuel-handling system.
Called out, our expert EDC North East engineers promptly arrived on site with a hire drive from our extensive fleet (we stock up to 500kW).
Providing this instant support enabled the blockage to be cleared and our customer to continue the vital production of electricity for the local grid.
Have a light bulb moment for your production: variable speed drive hire from EDC NE.
]]>The intrepid EDC engineers have known driving driving rain (followed by hordes of midges) in their quest to help our customers.
In this case it was tarp up, heads down inspecting ABB ACQ drives controlling pumps for a customer in the utilities industry.
No matter how remote you are, EDC can offer knowledgeable service, sorting inverter problems whenever (and wherever) they occur.]]>Joining the ever-expanding ranks of team EDC, Allan comes to us with a background of 30 years’ experience in electrical distribution and energy-efficient products.

]]>Asked to make a variable speed drive installation safe, EDC Scotland engineers were surprised to see how the site had been left. Our team duly set to work and made significant changes to the work which had previously been carried out. And the pride they took in doing this clearly shows in the finished setup.
