VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES PREVENTING WATER LEAKS IN PIPES

Read how Scottish Water has halved its leakage rates since 2006 - working in conjunction with ABB and EDC. Writing in the latest edition of 'Wet News’, Dan Banks, ABB’s water framework manager, explains how the use of inverters can reduce pressure in pipes, leading to fewer leaks. Citing the role VSDs such as ABB’s ACQ580 can play in reducing mechanical stress on essential equipment Dan comments: “One company that has been using VSDs to good effect in its fight against leakage is Scottish Water. More recently it has been working with ABB Authorized value provider EDC (Scotland) Ltd to focus on pumping stations and the effect they can have on leakage rates. In instances where pumping stations are already using soft starts, which ramp up the pump speed and hence the pressure gradually, EDC recommends using an ABB drive solution.” Read more about how the pressure is on to contol leaks and how variable speed drives can reduce leaks in the water industry.
